Back Windshield Replacement in Raleigh, NC

Broken tempered glass in small pieces, close up

Back windshield replacement in Raleigh is a different job from the front. The rear windshield is usually tempered glass, so when it breaks it does not crack and wait: it bursts into thousands of small pieces across the back seat, the cargo area or the bed of the truck. It carries the defroster grid and on many vehicles the radio antenna, and it is bonded into the body. Impex Auto Glass comes to the vehicle, clears out the broken glass, sets a new back windshield matched by VIN and tests the connections before you drive.

Raleigh Auto Glass Service is Impex Auto Glass serving South Raleigh and the towns down to Angier. For a smashed side window see door glass replacement in Raleigh; for the small fixed pane beside the rear seats see quarter glass replacement in Raleigh.

Three short steps: the glass, your vehicle and how to reach you. Impex comes back with a quote and a time. A photo of the rear of the vehicle helps.

Why back windshields break

Rear glass rarely meets a rock at highway speed the way a windshield does. It breaks in other ways, and knowing which one happened helps when you talk to your insurer.

  • Something in the cargo area or bed shifts. A ladder, a toolbox or a load of lumber slides forward under braking and taps the glass. On a pickup that is the usual cause.
  • A hatch or trunk lid is closed hard. On SUVs and hatchbacks the back glass sits in the lift gate and takes the shock every time it is slammed.
  • Something falls on it. A branch in a storm, ice from a gutter, a ball from the yard. The NC Department of Insurance lists ‘Missiles or falling objects’ among comprehensive losses.
  • Vandalism or a break-in. The back glass is a big target and easy to reach in a lot.
  • A small chip runs. Tempered glass under stress can let go all at once from a small edge chip, sometimes hours after the hit.

Back windshield replacement, step by step

  1. The part is checked. Impex verifies the glass by VIN, so the replacement has the same defroster grid, antenna, tint and mounting as the original. On a pickup that also decides between a fixed rear glass and a sliding one.
  2. The loose glass is cleared. Pieces are vacuumed from the seats, the cargo area, the bed or the trunk and from the channel around the opening.
  3. The old bonding is trimmed. What is left of the old adhesive is cut back so the new glass has a clean surface to bond to.
  4. The new back windshield is set. The glass is placed in the opening and pressed into fresh adhesive.
  5. The connections are made and checked. The defroster leads and any antenna or wiring attached to the glass are connected, and the defroster is tested before the technician leaves.

Impex puts a back glass replacement at about one to two hours. Afterwards, leave the rear defroster off for 24 hours while the bond settles, and avoid slamming the hatch or trunk for that first day. Run the car through a wash only after that. The how it works steps on the homepage show the whole visit, from the first call to driving away.

Before the visit: closing up the back of the car

An open back windshield lets rain straight into the cargo area or the back seat. Until the new glass is in, tape heavy plastic over the opening on the outside, sticking the tape to the paint around the frame rather than to the old adhesive. Painter’s tape comes off more cleanly than packing tape. Leave the hatch closed if you can, because each opening shakes more loose glass out of the frame. On a pickup with a broken rear glass, the cab is open to the bed, so keep the cab dry and park under cover if rain is due.

The article on covering a broken car window has more on materials and what to keep away from the paint.

Pickup trucks, SUVs and hatchbacks

The phrase back windshield covers several different parts. On a sedan it is the rear window under the trunk line. On an SUV, minivan or hatchback it is the glass in the lift gate, which moves every time the gate opens and often carries a wiper as well as the defroster. On a pickup it is the cab’s rear glass, fixed or with a sliding center panel, and on many trucks it is the glass most exposed to whatever is in the bed.

Because those differences are not always visible from outside, Impex’s VIN-based ordering is what makes a one-trip visit possible. If you run several trucks or vans, the fleet auto glass in Raleigh page explains how Impex handles work vehicles.

Rear glass and the law in North Carolina

G.S. 20-135 requires safety glass wherever glass is used in the windows of a North Carolina vehicle made on or after January 1, 1936. For tint on the rear window, G.S. 20-127 sets total light transmission of at least 35 percent and reflectance of 20 percent or less, with exceptions that include multipurpose vehicles such as pickups and minivans behind the driver. A light-meter reading over 32 percent is presumed to comply. Since December 1, 2025, tint is no longer part of the annual safety inspection, but the limits still apply on the road.

The annual safety inspection itself, under G.S. 20-183.3, checks the wipers rather than the glass. That does not make a missing back windshield something to drive around with: the opening lets in rain and road spray, and the plastic over it blocks the view behind you.

How a back windshield claim usually works

A shattered back windshield is normally covered under comprehensive. The NC Department of Insurance lists ‘Breakage of glass’ and ‘Missiles or falling objects’ among comprehensive losses, paid less any deductible. North Carolina has no law that waives the deductible for glass, so compare Impex’s quote with your comprehensive deductible before deciding whether to claim. Some policies include full glass coverage; your policy documents will tell you.

If you claim, you choose the shop. Under G.S. 58-3-180 a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle must let you select the repair service, and the insurer owes the same amount whoever you choose. Impex works with all major insurance providers and can deal with the claim once you have a claim number. A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though your insurer may look at how often you file claims.

Where we replace back windshields

The service is mobile across the south of Raleigh: driveways and apartment lots in Southeast Raleigh, homes around Lake Johnson and Swift Creek, and the longer roads out past Lake Wheeler to Willow Spring and Angier. The technician needs room behind the vehicle to work on the opening, a level spot, and a dry place if rain is due, because the adhesive should not go onto wet glass. See the service areas page for the full list, or the windshield replacement in Angier, NC page if you are on the Harnett side.

Questions drivers ask

Can a cracked back windshield be repaired?

Rarely. Most rear glass is tempered, so it shatters instead of cracking, and the answer is a new back windshield.

How long does a back windshield replacement take?

Impex puts a back glass at about one to two hours. Leave the rear defroster off for 24 hours afterwards.

Will my rear defroster work after the replacement?

The replacement is ordered by VIN with the same defroster grid, and the technician connects and tests it before leaving. Do not switch it on for the first 24 hours.

Is a back windshield covered by insurance in NC?

Usually under comprehensive, less your deductible. North Carolina has no zero-deductible glass law, so check your deductible and whether your policy has full glass coverage.

Can you replace the rear glass on a pickup truck?

Yes. Impex checks by VIN whether your truck has a fixed or a sliding rear glass, heated or not, and orders the matching part.

Do I need to clean up the glass first?

No. Leave it if you can and keep the hatch or trunk closed. The technician clears the broken glass out as part of the job.
